This blog will show the various differences in gear coupling and grind coupling.

So, couplings are devices that are connected at their ends and are normally used to transmit power. They play a very critical role in maintaining the machinery configuration of the industries. They act as a point of connection between two rotating shafts thereby converting power into torque and imparting it to the gear reducer so that it is passed on to the machinery being driven. It reduces the channelization of shock loads between two shafts; thereby plying protection against overloads. When chosen properly, couplings can also be used to correct misalignment of the shafts that give mechanical flexibility.

From gear couplings to grid couplings, Shree Shakti Industries puts up a diverse array of couplings to serve several purposes in the best way possible. Here are a few differences cited between two basic types of coupling- gear coupling and grid coupling.

Grid Coupling

Commonly known as T coupling, it is used to channelize the torque between two coupling shafts through a metallic grid spring element. It has a very high torque density that renders much higher torsional flexibility. The spring coupling element can absorb and spread peak load impact energy over time. This makes it advantageous because it reduces the peak load and also provides some additional vibration dampening capability. But along with pros comes the cons of everything. The T coupling has a very limited ability in accommodation of alignments.

Gear Coupling

Popular with its acronym, G coupling, the gear coupling usually transmits torque between two non-collinear shafts. Each shaft has a flexible joint that are fixed with each other by a third shaft or spindle. It has a very high torsional density and the gear teeth provides high backlash for angular misalignment. But excess backlash often contributes to vibrations.

The various types of gear coupling are enlisted below:

Single engagement type

This typical G coupling variety has two hubs that are connected to the shafts and also connected with each other by a continuous sleeve.

Double engagement type

This type of G coupling offers two flexed halves for the accommodation of minor misalignments.

Spacer coupling

It is a type of double engagement G coupling with a central spacer tube used for correction of the small gaps amidst the connecting parts.

Floating shaft assembly

This variety consists of two single engagement couplings joined with each other by another shaft that acts as a connective. This has a critical role when the gap between two connecting parts is too large to be corrected by spacer G coupling.

These are the major basic differences between gear coupling and grid coupling. But for choosing the type that would best suit your requirements, there is always a need for high quality.
